Paul O’Dette is currently Director of Early Music, Professor of Lute at the Eastman School of Music and is Artistic Director of the Boston Early Music Festival. One of the most influential figures in his field, Mr. O’Dette has helped define the technical and stylistic standards to which 21st-century performers aspire.

GRAMMY-nominated lutenist Ronn McFarlane has made his mark in music as a founding member of the Baltimore Consort, touring 49 of the 50 United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Netherlands, Germany and Austria; the founder of Ayreheart; and as a guest artist with Apollo’s Fire, The Bach Sinfonia, The Catacoustic Consort, The Folger Consort, Houston Grand Opera, The Oregon Symphony, The Portland Baroque Orchestra, and The Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra.

The program is titled For Two Lutes: Virtuoso Duets from Italy and England.  It features the two musicians “dueling” on their lutes, trading passages back and forth with increasingly dazzling feats of virtuosity.

Included are pieces by John Dowland, John Johnson, John Danyel, Francesco da Milano, Alessandro Piccinini, and anonymous composers. The first performances of this program took place in January of 2016 at the Boston Early Music Festival concert series in both New York and Boston.

It is a real treat to be able to present these masters of early music to the St. Louis community. We are sure they will not disappoint!

Mr. O'Dette and Mr. McFarlane will conduct a master class for young area guitar students on Sunday, March 11, 1:00 - 3:00 pm at the UMSL Building 205,  1 University Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63121. Admission is $5 at the door, free to Guitar Society Members. For more information call Mark Akin at 314 567-5566.
