Week of July 4 2016: Highlights: In honor of Independence Day, enjoy some American tunes from favorites such as Scott Joplin and George Gershwin. Also - Listen for the recordings from 'Slightly Above Below Average,' a compilation album honoring the great American guitar player Chet Atkins, put together by St. Louis guitarist John McClellan.
Week of June 27 2016: Highlights: Niccolo Paganini (1782 - 1840) was an internationally famous virtuosic violinist of his time, infatuated by the guitar. In fact, he wrote more pieces for guitar than for violin! On tonight's program - Paganini's solo works for guitar and his Sonata Concertata in A major, Opus 61 for guitar and violin.
Week of June 20 2016: Highlights: Music written for legendary classical guitarist Julian Bream by composers Leo Brouwer, Emilio Pujol, Toru Takemitsu and more! We will play the recordings of Sharon Isbin, Johannes Möller, Christopher Mallett, Kaori Muraji, and also Julian Bream himself.
Week of June 13 2016: Highlights: We will share the classic recordings of Julian Bream on this 'Inside Classical Guitar' radio program! Hear Bream performing Romantic era pieces by Spanish composers Enrique Granados and Isaac Albéniz.
Week of June 6 2016: Highlights: Lute tunes of the Renaissance! All recordings on this program come from the album 'Merry Melancholy,' from German lutenist Joachim Held. Held performs selections of English lute music of the 16th century, such as 'Frog Galliard' by John Dowland, 'Packington's Pound' by Francis Cutting, 'Delight Pavan' by John Johnson and more!
Week of May 30 2016: Highlights: American music for the guitar in honor of Memorial Day! Patriotic tunes, Western anthems, and country waltzes performed by LA Guitar Quartet, local guitarist John McClellan, Douglas Black, and Small-Torres Guitar Duo. Listen in and you may recognize tunes by Aaron Copland, John Phillip Sousa, and Chet Atkins.
Week of May 23 2016: Highlights: David Russell's album 'The Grandeur of the Baroque' released in 2012 on Telarc, includes his own arrangements for guitar of Baroque lute and harpsichord music. Works by Sylvius Leopold Weiss, Francois Couperin, and George Frederic Händel. David Russell, Grammy-award winning Scottish guitarist, will return to St. Louis March 25th, 2017 at the Ethical Society.
Week of May 16 2016: Highlights: This program features world-famous classical guitarist Christopher Parkening, playing the music of Vivaldi, Ravel, Debussy, Poulenc, and more!
Week of May 9 2016: Highlights: The Royal Family of the Guitar - Los Romeros Part II, featuring Pepe Romero. Pepe plays the music of Spanish guitarist and composer Francisco Tárrega (1852 - 1909), along with some traditional flamenco. Featured Tárrega classics include 'Capricho Arabe,' 'Adelita,' 'Recuerdos de la Alhambra' and more.
Week of May 2 2016: Highlights: The Royal Family of Guitar, the Romeros, return to St. Louis on March 4th, 2017. Save the date! Until then, listen to our Romeros radio program, Part 1. On tonight's show, we showcase the solo recordings of Celedonia Romero, the founder the Romeros Quartet, with three sons Pepe, Celin, and Angel. Celedonia plays music of the Spanish Renaissance for the first half, while the quartet ends the show with music from 'Carmen.'
