Highlights: This week's program focuses on Hungarian-born guitarist and composer Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806 - 1856). Mertz was known for his passion-filled, lyrical guitar compositions, inspired by Romantic music and piano stylizations. We will feature recordings of Mertz's acclaimed repertoire by guitarists Thibalut Cauvin, David Russell, Fabio Zanon, and more! The last piece in the program, performed by Franco Platino, is Mertz's 'Elegie.' An elegy is a song typically written to lament for one who has died. It has been speculated that Mertz had written this piece for himself while he was suffering from a life threatening disease, which eventually killed him.
