Born in 1993 in Arlington, Minnesota of an American mother and Chilean father, Xavier Jara started playing guitar at the age of 12.
At the age of 15, Xavier won First Place in both the Schubert Club and the Thursday Musical Scholarship competitions, playing numerous recitals associated with these competitions.
In 2011, he won First Place in the Senior Division of the Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition, as well as First Place in the Youth Division of the Indiana International Guitar Competition.
Since then he has won First Prize in the 2012 Andres Segovia Competition for Young Guitarists in Velbert, Germany; First Prize at the Boston GuitarFest; First Place at the International Guitar Competition of Viseu (Portugal); First Prize at the Sinaia International Guitar Competition in Romania; and also, was featured on the American National Public Radio program "From the Top."
Currently, Xavier continues to study at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris in the class of Olivier Chassain, while he also studies privately with guitarist Judicael Perroy. His most recent accomplishment was winning the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar Competition in June 2016.
As part of his win, Jara recorded a CD with the Naxos label featuring works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, John Dowland, and Dusan Bogdanvoic among others. A review of this album by Dr. Albert Kunze reads, “Jara is a wonderful player, exhibiting glorious sound and flawless technique.” In addition, he was awarded a 50+ city concert tour which includes his St. Louis debut under the auspices of The Saint Louis Classical Guitar Society.
His win is sure to become our win as well, as this 24-year-old opens our new season with his stunning talent. This show is not to be missed!
