Born in Marseilles, France, in 1978, Gaëlle Solal began playing the guitar at the age of 6 with René Bartoli. At age fourteen she won three gold medals and the Prix de la Ville at the Conservatoire de Marseilles. She has studied with Alberto Ponce at Conservatoire Supereur de Musique de Paris, Roberto Aussel at Musikhochscule Koln (Germany) and lvaro Pierri at the Université du Québec à Montréal. She was awarded First Grand Prix at the Alessandria, Locquémeau, Savona, and Sernancehle guitar competitions, the Honor Diplom at Accademia Chigiana, was a Finalist at Concert Artists Guild Auditions (NY), and Second Prize winner at the Guitar Foundation of America. Gaëlle has toured over 30 countries as soloist, and has played with the Berkeley Symphony, the Garde Républicaine Orchestra, and the Philharmonic Turin Orchestra. She has recorded for NHK (Japan), France Musiques, RFI (France), and RAI (Italy). Gaëlle’s St. Louis debut performance will include music by composers from France, Spain, and Latin America.
