Legendary American Guitarist Christopher Parkening will conduct an historic master class in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of our Founding! The date is June 9, 2013, 1:00 - 3:00 pm in University Theater at Xavier Hall on the campus of St. Louis University, sponsored by the the Music Program in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. This class is co-presented in cooperation with the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society in its day-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of its founding on June 9, 1963, with Mr. Parkening also serving as Honorary Chair of our 50th Anniversary Committee.

In 1999, Christopher Parkening performed the world premiere of Elmer Bernstein’s Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra with the Honolulu Symphony as part of their 100th anniversary season. He has recorded this concerto along with The Alhambra: La Vega by Isaac Albeniz with the London Symphony Orchestra, Elmer Bernstein conducting.  He is the recipient of two Grammy® nominations in the category of Best Classical Recording for Parkening and the Guitar and The Pleasures of Their Company, a collaboration with soprano Kathleen Battle.

In July, 2012 in Charleston, South Carolina, the renowned American classical guitarist Christopher Parkening was inducted into the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) "Hall of Fame" and given their "Artistic Achievement Award." This prestigious award is given to "performers who have made monumental contributions to the development of the art and life of the classical guitar."

Mr. Parkening also used this occasion to make this notable announcement: "As I am gathered with you to celebrate the classical guitar, I have chosen this time and place to share with you what for me is a rather difficult announcement. After nearly five decades as a concert guitarist, the time has come for me to step away from the concert stage.

“Some of you know that for these past few years I have had some physical issues resulting in numerous back surgeries. At this point in my life, I would like to focus more on my family and on my commitment to teaching my students at Pepperdine University and in master classes throughout the country, sharing my insights and experiences—both musical and personal—as I mentor young artists."

PLEASE NOTE: Tickets to this event (one ticket per registrant) are included in Registration for the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner!
