Week of October 17 2016

Highlights: Harpsichord music arranged for guitar, Piazzolla tangos, and more from the brothers Assad! In between, hear from our Artistic Director William Ash on the 2016-2017 concert series, and as well our public school guitar programs. Ash introduces our Visionary Campaign to help fund St. Louis Classical Guitar Society educators who team-teach guitar ensembles alongside public-school music teachers. SLCGS supports programs in the following districts: St. Louis City Public Schools, Ferguson, Hazelwood, Jennings, and Normandy.

Week of October 10 2016

Highlights: All selections from 'Novecento Guitar Sonatas,' solo album of Italian guitarist Cristiano Porqueddu, known for his performances of 20th-century music for guitar. We begin and end the program with two Franco Cavallone sonatas, the first inspired by the music of Ravel, the second inspired by the music of American composers, such as Bernstein.

Week of September 26 2016

Highlights: Preview of our fist concert of the season with young Franco-Spanish phenom Thibaut Garcia - Saturday October 1st, 8:00pm at the Ethical Society. This program features works from Garcia's album 'Leyendas,' including classic pieces from Spain such as Tárrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra and Asturias by Albeniz (this specific arrangement by his teacher and mentor Olivier Chassain of the Paris Conservatory).

Week of September 19 2016

Highlights: All selections are from the album “Meng,” featuring Meng Su of The Beijing Guitar Duo. A diverse repertoire - Pieces by Tarrega, Bach's lute suite in E Major, William Walton's Five Bagatelles, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco “Omaggio a Boccherini,” Op. 17 Sonata.

Week of August 29 2016

Highlights: Selections from “Cavatina Duo – Sephardic Journey,” the newest album by the Cavatina Duo - husband and wife Eugenia Moliner (flute), and Denis Azabagic (guitarist). Moliner and Azabagic both realized they had Sephardic Jewish relatives from the 15th century, who either had to leave Spain or convert to Christianity. Inspired by their heritage, the duo compiled works from Sephardic folk tunes over a span of 20 years. Cavatina Duo collaborated with a number of musicians for this project, including the Avalon String Quartet.

Week of August 22 2016

Highlights: All selections are from "Homage to Agustín Barrios" featuring Spanish guitarist Virginia Luque. Luque performs on her album as a soloist, but also alongside cellist David Cunliffe on 'Trio Sefardi,' violinist Desiree Ruhstrat on 'Plegaria y Canto,' and the Avalon String Quartet on 'Sephardic Suite.'
